Bhai Dooj: A Celebration of Sibling Love

Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhai Phota, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It falls on the second day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Kartik.

Significance of Bhai Dooj:

• Symbol of Love and Protection: This festival symbolizes the strong bond between siblings. Sisters pray for their brothers' long life, prosperity, and happiness.
• Yami-Yam Ritual: The legend associated with Bhai Dooj involves Yami, the sister of Yamraj, the god of death. Yami visited Yamraj and requested him to bless her brother. Since then, it's believed that sisters who perform rituals on Bhai Dooj ensure the well-being of their brothers.

Rituals of Bhai Dooj:

1. Tilak Ceremony: Sisters apply a tilak (a mark on the forehead) to their brothers' foreheads using rice paste, kumkum, and haldi (turmeric).
2. Aarti: Sisters perform an aarti for their brothers, seeking blessings and protection.
3. Exchange of Gifts: Brothers and sisters exchange gifts as a token of love and affection.
4. Sharing a Meal: A special meal is shared by the siblings, often prepared by the sister.
